"If Uhuru Were To Run In 2027, He Will Not Beat President Ruto" COTU Boss Francis Atwoli Alleges

Trade union leader Francis Atwoli has claimed that former President Uhuru Kenyatta was responsible for Raila Odinga’s defeat in the 2022 presidential election and has insisted that Uhuru would still fail to beat President William Ruto if he chose to run in 2027.

Speaking during an interview in one of the Media outlets, Atwoli openly faulted Uhuru’s role in the Azimio la Umoja campaign, saying the former President did not fully commit himself to Raila’s bid despite publicly declaring his support.

According to Atwoli, Uhuru’s actions during the campaign period did not match the weight of the task at hand.

“Former President Uhuru Kenyatta was the one responsible for Raila’s loss in 2022. Even if Uhuru were to run in 2027, he would not beat President Ruto,” Atwoli said.

He explained that while Uhuru appeared to stand with Raila in public, he failed to directly engage with the people who were doing the actual campaign work on the ground.

“Uhuru appeared to be supporting Baba but at no point did he convene a meeting with the people who were on the frontline campaigning for Raila,” Atwoli stated.

Atwoli went ahead and poured cold water on any talk of Uhuru making a political comeback in 2027.

He maintained that President Ruto has since consolidated his political base and would be difficult to defeat, even by a former Head of State.

In his remarks, Atwoli further questioned Uhuru’s ability to influence future presidential contests.

He revealed that there are claims Uhuru now prefers former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as a potential presidential candidate. However, Atwoli warned Matiang’i against relying too much on Uhuru’s backing.

“I now hear he is saying he wants Matiang’i to be President. If Matiang’i is not careful with his own moves, Uhuru will not make him a President. If he didn’t make Raila, how can he make Matiang’i to be a president?” Atwoli asked.
