Just hours before the shocking death of Raila Odinga, his elder brother, Oburu Oginga, had what he now calls “the most unforgettable conversation” of his life.
It was supposed to be a casual evening call between two brothers — yet, looking back, Oburu says something about it didn’t feel ordinary.
Speaking softly from his Siaya home, Oburu recalled that Raila had phoned him around 8 p.m., sounding calm but distant.
“He asked how the family was doing and if everything in Bondo was okay,” Oburu shared, his voice trembling.
“But there was a strange pause in his tone, as if his mind was elsewhere.”
Then came words that would later shake Oburu to the core. “He told me something I can’t erase from my mind,” Oburu said quietly.
“At that moment, I didn’t understand what he meant — but now I do.”
He refused to reveal the exact phrase, only saying it now makes painful sense.
“When I heard the news a few hours later, I went numb. It was like he had spoken his farewell without saying goodbye,” he whispered.
According to close family members, Oburu has been replaying that call in his mind ever since, wondering if Raila had sensed what was coming.
“He sounded peaceful, almost too peaceful,” one relative said. “As if he had already made peace with something we didn’t know.”
Kenyans online have been deeply moved by Oburu’s account. Many said it felt eerie — as if Raila had unknowingly left behind a coded goodbye only his brother could decode.
“That call will live in his memory forever,” one mourner wrote on social media. “It’s the kind of moment that breaks even the strongest hearts.”
As the Odinga family prepares to lay their patriarch to rest in Bondo this Sunday, that final phone call remains wrapped in mystery — the last thread connecting two brothers bound by love, destiny, and loss.
