A 27-year-old man from Laikipia, Wilson Wambugu, is serving an 80-year prison sentence — a punishment he insists is the result of false accusations and a bitter family feud.
Speaking from prison, Wambugu said his troubles began when he fell out with a relative who had employed him as a shamba boy in Nyeri.
According to Wambugu, the fallout started over something as trivial as alcohol. “He asked me to buy him drinks, but I told him I didn’t have the money,” he recalled in an interview with Jamba TV’s Simon Kibe. “I was earning KSh 6,000 a month, most of which went to my mother’s medication. I only had about KSh 1,000 left for myself.”
He claims that after refusing to buy the alcohol, the cousin threatened to “teach him a lesson.” That same evening, police officers allegedly showed up at his workplace and arrested him over accusations of defiling three teenage girls.
Wambugu maintains his innocence, saying the alleged victims even told the authorities he had done nothing wrong. “They said it was all lies, but still, I was convicted and given 80 years,” he lamented.
Now behind bars, the young man says the reality of spending the rest of his life in prison has crushed his spirit. “It’s painful knowing I’ll be here until 2076. I’ll be 81 by then — if I even make it that far,” he said softly.
Despite his despair, Wambugu still clings to hope that someone will hear his story and help him prove his innocence. “I just want justice. I didn’t do it,” he insisted.
