DCP Party leader Rigathi Gachagua's camp have rejected suggestions to have Gachagua serve as a running mate in the 2027 opposition coalition, insisting he should instead be the presidential flag bearer.
Speaking during a meeting in the United Kingdom, Nyandarua Senator John Methu argued that Gachagua commands a significant political following that makes him unsuitable for a deputy position.
Methu described Gachagua as the “engine” driving the opposition, emphasizing that his influence and support base should place him at the top of the ticket.
“A person who has five million votes cannot deputise someone with three million votes. If the engine that can drive the opposition is the same engine that will drive the government, then that person should be fronted and eventually become president,” Methu stated.
At the same time, Methu cautioned against Gachagua prolonging his stay abroad, warning that his absence could weaken the opposition’s momentum.
According to him, Gachagua remains a key force in mobilizing support against the current administration, and his prolonged absence could slow down the opposition’s efforts ahead of the next election.
