A peaceful political rally in Runyenjes, Embu County, turned chaotic on Saturday after suspected goons attacked officials from the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
The event, which brought together top opposition leaders, was meant to show unity and strength as they launched their joint campaign ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Witnesses said everything began calmly. Leaders had gathered to address residents about their plans to form a strong coalition that could challenge the current administration.
DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua was among those present, promising to restore leadership and unity in the Mt. Kenya region.
But shortly after the speeches started, a group of rowdy youths disrupted the event. They threw stones at the podium and chased away party officials, forcing Gachagua’s team to flee from the area for safety.
Some locals said the attackers seemed well-organized and might have been sent by rival political figures who didn’t want the rally to succeed.
In a video that later went viral online, men armed with batons were seen running after the DCP campaign vehicle as residents stood by, shocked by the sudden violence.
The commotion brought the event to an abrupt end, with several people sustaining minor injuries during the chaos.
He accused unnamed leaders of hiring goons to silence the opposition and said the incident showed how far political intolerance had gone in Kenya.
“Runyenjes people have spoken loudly. You stood firm and refused to bow to threats. This is a sign that Kenyans are tired of dictatorship and are ready for change,” he said.
He added that such acts of violence would not stop the coalition from pushing for fair leadership and accountability.
The opposition alliance vowed to continue with their rallies across the country despite the attacks.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about political violence and security ahead of the 2027 elections.
Many Kenyans are now calling on authorities to ensure that every political group can campaign freely without fear or intimidation.
