Fresh details have emerged regarding the final moments of Alice Riang’a, a second-year student at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, before she was later found dead in Bondo, Siaya County.
According to family members, the 20-year-old spoke with her mother on Wednesday evening in what would become their last known conversation.
During the phone call, Alice reportedly checked on her mother’s wellbeing before making a simple request for money to buy sweet potatoes, which she said she had been craving.
Family sources further revealed that the university student also requested an opportunity to speak with her younger sister later that evening.
Her mother reportedly agreed to the request but was still away from home when Alice attempted to call again approximately an hour later.
By the time the mother returned home at around 7 pm, Alice’s phone had already been switched off.
Relatives say that marked the last communication between the student and her family.
Her father later disclosed that repeated attempts to reach her afterward proved unsuccessful, with the phone remaining unreachable in the following days.
Concern grew after Alice reportedly failed to return to her hostel and missed academic activities at the university.
Her disappearance was eventually reported by her roommate, prompting a search by family members, friends and authorities.
The search later ended tragically after her body was reportedly discovered in a forest in Barkowino area, Bondo, in Siaya County.
The incident has shocked fellow students, residents and family members, many of whom have expressed grief over the death of the young student described as focused and ambitious.
Police have since launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death.
According to reports, detectives are investigating an individual identified as Maximillian John Madeni, who is said to have been the last person to communicate with Alice before she disappeared.
Authorities believe the communication records could provide important leads as investigations continue.
Detectives are expected to analyse phone data, witness statements and forensic evidence to establish the events leading to the student’s death.
The case has sparked concern among students and members of the public, with many calling for swift investigations and justice for the deceased.
Friends and classmates have continued sharing emotional tributes online, remembering Alice as a calm, hardworking and determined young woman whose future had been cut short.
Her death has also reignited discussions about the safety of university students and the need for greater awareness regarding personal security.
As investigations continue, the family remains in mourning while awaiting answers over the circumstances that led to the tragic death of their daughter.
Police have urged members of the public to avoid speculation and allow investigators time to complete inquiries into the matter.
