Litein Girls Principal Under Fire After Locking Out Two Female Students at Night

The principal of Litein Girls High School in Kericho County is facing public criticism after two students were reportedly locked out of the school compound at night.

The incident happened on the evening of October 3, when students were returning from their mid-term break.

Some had travelled long distances from Nairobi and other regions, arriving late in the evening. Instead of being allowed inside, two of them were allegedly ordered to stay outside the main gate.

Photos shared online showed the two girls sitting quietly at the gate as darkness approached. The images quickly spread, sparking outrage among Kenyans who expressed concern over the students’ safety.

Parents and citizens condemned the school’s administration for exposing learners to risks. Many argued that the punishment was too harsh, especially considering that the girls had travelled from far.

One parent asked, “Why couldn’t the principal let them in for the night and address the issue the next day?” Another concerned Kenyan wrote, “What if something had happened to those children while they were stranded outside at night?”

The incident has raised broader questions about how schools handle discipline and whether administrators are balancing rules with the responsibility of keeping students safe.

This is not the first time such an incident has been reported in Kenya.

Earlier this year, students from St. Anne’s Girls Secondary School in Nairobi were forced to spend part of the night outside after the principal sent them away over unpaid school fees. They were only allowed back after Makadara MP George Aladwa intervened.

In Nyeri County, seven students from Kegonye Secondary School were stranded in Othaya town after arriving late by just one hour.

The learners, who had travelled from places like Naivasha and Nakuru, were eventually taken to a police station for safety.

Education stakeholders, parents, and members of the public have now urged the Ministry of Education to look into such cases. Many argue that while discipline is important, it should not come at the expense of students’ security.
