"Ako Wapi? Mshajitenga" Kenyans Ask United Opposition as Fred Matiang'i Misses Kajiado Tour

The opposition coalition faced renewed scrutiny on Friday, October 3, after several top leaders toured Kajiado County in a show of unity.

What caught the public’s eye, however, was the absence of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i — a development that quickly set off speculation about cracks within the coalition.

The rally, held in Bisil, Kajiado Central, brought together key figures including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), Eugene Wamalwa of the Democratic Action Party, and Justin Muturi of the Democratic Party of Kenya.

The leaders promised to stand together as “a government in waiting” and used the event to assure residents that the coalition remained strong despite rising political pressure from President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza alliance.

In a post shared on social media, Kalonzo expressed optimism about the opposition’s chances, writing that he looked forward to engaging the people of Kajiado alongside fellow leaders.

Photos showed the group interacting with residents, but Matiang’i and Martha Karua were notably missing from the lineup.

Their absence, particularly that of Matiang’i, drew sharp attention on social media. Many Kenyans questioned why the influential figure was missing, with some arguing that leaving him out could weaken the coalition’s credibility.

Online debates grew louder as critics suggested that failing to involve strong voices like Matiang’i might give President Ruto an upper hand heading into the 2027 elections.

“This team without Matiang’i is not united. If he is sidelined, the opposition will fall apart,” one user commented.

Others urged Kalonzo and the rest of the leadership to act with diplomacy and ensure that no major political player felt pushed aside.

Observers also noted that the coalition skipped a Jubilee Party delegates’ meeting, raising further speculation of growing mistrust among opposition partners.

Jubilee, linked to retired president Uhuru Kenyatta, has been viewed as a crucial player in Mount Kenya politics. Its absence from the Kajiado event only fueled talk of rifts. Click here.
