"You Stand Impeached, Ineligible To Vie For Presidency" Ruto's Loyalist Cherargei Tells Rigathi Gachagua

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has strongly declared that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is not eligible to contest in the 2027 presidential race or any other political position because of his impeachment.

Speaking during a public meeting in Chesumei Constituency, Nandi County over the weekend,  2025, Cherargei, who is also a lawyer, explained that the Constitution of Kenya bars anyone who has been impeached from holding public office.

He questioned why Gachagua’s name continues to feature in political discussions despite this clear provision.

“Once a leader has been impeached, the law is very clear – you cannot seek any elective seat again. Gachagua knows this, yet he keeps insisting he will run for president. That is misleading to his supporters,” Cherargei said.

His remarks come just days after Gachagua toured parts of Mt. Kenya, where he declared himself the strongest challenger to President William Ruto in 2027.

While in Karatina, Gachagua told supporters that he stood the best chance to send the Kenya Kwanza administration home.

“I believe I am the most prepared to be President. I have what it takes to defeat Ruto in the coming election,” Gachagua said.

However, Cherargei dismissed this statement, insisting that the impeachment process against the former DP was already concluded in both the National Assembly and Senate, making him legally unfit to contest.

He went further to mock Gachagua, saying he was unfit even to serve in minor community roles.

“Forget about running for president. Gachagua cannot even qualify to sit in a family funeral committee. That is how serious impeachment is,” he added.

According to Cherargei, Gachagua was impeached for promoting tribalism and disrespecting the office of the president.

He argued that Kenyans should instead focus on supporting President Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027, citing what he described as key achievements by the Kenya Kwanza government in the last three years.

“The opposition should accept reality. Ruto is a two-term president and the people will vote for him again in 2027,” Cherargei told the crowd.
