The legal community in Kenya is in shock following the brutal killing of prominent lawyer Kyalo Mbobu in Karen earlier this week.
His death has sparked outrage among citizens, political leaders, and members of the judiciary, highlighting the urgent need for action against violent crime in the country.
Professor Makau Mutua, a constitutional and political adviser to President William Ruto, took to social media on Friday, September 12, 2025, to call for the immediate arrest of everyone involved in Mbobu’s murder.

Mutua described the attack as a “gangland execution” and insisted that the perpetrators must be apprehended and punished without delay.
“The gangland execution of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu is a savage affront to our collective humanity as Kenyans. The perpetrators must be arrested immediately and sanctioned without pity. A democratic civilization cannot tolerate such violence,” Mutua wrote, tagging key law enforcement offices, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
The late Mbobu was an advocate of the High Court with over 30 years of distinguished service. His work extended beyond the courtroom. He served as Chairman of the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal and was a lecturer at the University of Nairobi, where he influenced countless law students.

His expertise in evidence law earned him respect throughout Kenya’s legal fraternity. The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) condemned the killing, calling it a possible premeditated assassination.
LSK President Faith Odhiambo emphasized that the murder is not only a personal tragedy but also a threat to Kenya’s democratic foundations.
“His service to the country leaves an indelible mark on his legacy. May his soul rest in peace,” Odhiambo said, adding that unchecked insecurity could destabilize the legal profession and the rule of law.
In response to the murder, the ODPP has directed the Inspector General of Police to submit a detailed report within seven days.

Investigators have been instructed to prioritize evidence collection and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
Both the DPP and DCI have urged eyewitnesses and the general public to provide any information that could help in tracing the killers.
Community cooperation is now considered vital. Investigators believe that details from residents, security cameras, and anyone present near the scene could help piece together what happened.
