"Arrested in 1973" Kenyans React to Orengo’s Historic Arrest Photo During Jomo Kenyatta's Regime

A trending photo of Senator James Orengo being arrested in 1973 has resurfaced online, sparking fresh discussions among Kenyans about his long political journey.

At the time the photo was taken, Orengo was a final-year student at the University of Nairobi.

He had taken a leading role in organising student protests against the government of Kenya’s first president, Jomo Kenyatta.

His actions led to his arrest and eventual expulsion from the university.

Despite this setback, Orengo did not give up on his education. He later travelled to Tanzania, where he completed his law studies at the University of Dar es Salaam.

This period is believed to have further shaped his political views and strengthened his stand on justice and governance.

The resurfacing of the photo has surprised many Kenyans, especially younger generations who may not have known that Orengo’s activism dates back to the early years of independence.

For many, it explains why he has remained a consistent voice in opposition politics over the decades.

Today, Orengo continues to be vocal, often challenging the government of President William Ruto.

His long history of activism has led many to describe him as one of the most consistent political figures in the country.

Reactions on social media have been mixed. One Facebook user commented, “He has been fighting since the days of the first president and is still doing the same today. He is indeed a special man.”

Another added, “He has been in the struggle for so long. When will he rest? Even as 2027 approaches, he is still active.”

As the next general election draws closer, many Kenyans are wondering whether Orengo will finally step back from active politics.

However, given his history, it remains difficult to predict his next move.
