David Mwenje: The Controversial MP Who Drank Keg with Locals, Lived In Dandora

David Mwenje was a unique Kenyan politician known for his unconventional lifestyle and close relationship with ordinary citizens.

Unlike many Members of Parliament who lived in luxury, he resided in Dandora and often socialised with locals in simple bars, where he would drink keg and engage freely with residents.

This approach made him widely popular among his constituents, who saw him as one of their own.

Before joining politics, Mwenje worked in the banking sector.

He later transitioned into public service and became a councillor representing Dandora in the late 1970s.

His political journey progressed when he was elected MP for Embakasi in 1988 after a highly contested election that required a repeat vote.

Over the years, he served multiple terms in Parliament, though he also faced several electoral defeats.

In Parliament, Mwenje was known for his outspoken nature and bold political actions.

One of his most notable moments was initiating a motion of no confidence against then Vice President Josephat Karanja in 1989, which contributed to Karanja’s resignation.

He later served as an assistant minister in different dockets.

Despite his humble lifestyle, Mwenje was often involved in political confrontations and controversies, including public disputes with fellow politicians.

He passed away in 2008 after being admitted to hospital and falling into a coma.
