Orengo Breaks Silence After KICC Meeting: “Raila Did Not Create a Broad-Based Government”

Siaya Governor James Orengo has dismissed claims that Raila Odinga engineered the formation of a broad-based government following the release of the joint parliamentary group report on the 10-point agenda.

His remarks come shortly after a high-level political meeting held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi.

The meeting, chaired by President William Ruto and ODM leader Oburu Odinga, brought together lawmakers from the ruling United Democratic Alliance and the opposition Orange Democratic Movement.

Leaders reviewed the progress of the widely discussed 10-point agenda, which seeks to address political cooperation, economic reforms, and governance issues.

However, speaking shortly after the session, Orengo insisted that the ongoing engagement between the two political sides should not be interpreted as the creation of a coalition government.

According to the governor, Raila’s involvement in the talks was meant to facilitate dialogue and national stability rather than merge the opposition with the ruling administration.

Orengo argued that the term “broad-based government” has been misused in public debate. He said the discussions between ODM and UDA were aimed at resolving national concerns and finding common ground on key issues affecting Kenyans, including the high cost of living, electoral reforms, and institutional accountability.

The governor emphasized that Raila remains a central figure in opposition politics and has not formally joined the government.

He maintained that the engagements taking place between political leaders should be seen as a platform for dialogue rather than a restructuring of Kenya’s political alliances.

Political analysts say Orengo’s remarks reflect ongoing tensions within ODM over the party’s cooperation with the ruling side.

Some members believe the partnership could help push policy reforms, while others fear it could blur the party’s opposition identity ahead of the 2027 general election.

The joint parliamentary group meeting at KICC concluded with leaders affirming their commitment to the 10-point agenda framework. Still, statements like Orengo’s indicate that the debate over the true nature of the political arrangement is far from settled.

As the country continues to watch developments, the question of whether the ongoing cooperation represents political unity or strategic dialogue remains a key issue in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
