Kibera Court has allowed former Nairobi Central Police Station OCS Samson Talaam to receive specialized kidney treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital while his murder trial continues.
The ruling has shocked many, as Talaam faces murder charges over the brutal death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang, who died in a police cell under disturbing circumstances.
Talaam is among six accused persons facing trial for the murder of Ojwang, who died while in police custody. The court ruling, issued on March 11, directed that a medical report be submitted after the examination, with the case set to resume on March 17.
The development has reignited public fury. A post-mortem established that Ojwang died from head trauma caused by blunt force, neck compression, and multiple bruises, ruling out suicide as the cause of death.
IPOA investigators uncovered evidence suggesting an attempted cover-up, including a CCTV system that had been tampered with and storage discs reformatted hours before the death was reported.
The killing of Ojwang sparked countrywide demonstrations, resulting in the destruction of property, including the burning of Mawengo Police Station. Relatives of the deceased have since expressed fear for their lives.
Critics are now asking the hard question: why does a man accused of such a horrific crime deserve medical mercy that his alleged victim was never afforded?
