Mike Sonko Pledge to Donate Coffins and Transport to Families Who Loved Ones During Floods

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has stepped forward with a compassionate pledge to support grieving families affected by the devastating floods that have claimed lives across the capital.

Through his Sonko Rescue Team, the former governor has committed to providing free coffins, transportation for bodies and family members, and assistance with any pending mortuary bills to ensure the deceased receive a dignified send-off in their rural homes.

Speaking at his Upper Hill office on Tuesday, March 10, Sonko expressed deep empathy for the bereaved and announced that his team would begin coordinating support at the City Mortuary on Wednesday.

His friend Morris Zawo recalled the painful moment.

He said Martin attempted to cross the water, but the current was too strong and quickly carried him away.

The tragedy has also reunited a family that had not seen the victim for many years.

Martin’s uncle, John Muyonga, said they had not heard from him for fifteen years until the police called them to identify his body at the mortuary.

Doctors who carried out postmortem examinations on eight bodies recovered this week confirmed that all the victims died from drowning.

Many families say the pain of losing their loved ones has been made worse by the long process of identification and paperwork.

Some families have criticised both the national government and the for what they call a delayed response during the floods.

As rescue teams continue searching rivers and drainage channels, several families still wait anxiously, hoping their missing relatives may yet be found alive.
