Martha Karua has declared that she will run for the presidency in the 2027 General Election but intends to serve for only one term if elected.
The veteran politician said her decision is guided by a belief that leadership should focus on delivering meaningful reforms within a limited period rather than clinging to power for many years.
Karua explained that Kenya needs leaders who concentrate on laying a strong foundation for future governments instead of treating political office as a long-term entitlement.
She insisted that a single five-year term is enough for a committed administration to initiate reforms and restore public trust in governance.
According to the People’s Liberation Party leader, her focus is not on occupying the presidency for personal ambition but on serving the country and strengthening democratic institutions.
She stated that if Kenyans grant her the opportunity to lead the nation, she would dedicate the five years to fixing key governance challenges and establishing systems that future leaders can build upon.
Karua also noted that leadership should involve accountability and humility, adding that leaders must recognise when it is time to hand over power to a new generation.
She argued that Kenya’s political culture would benefit if leaders prioritised service over longevity in office, noting that the country’s development requires consistent renewal of leadership ideas.
The former Justice Minister further explained that the problems facing Kenya cannot be completely solved by a single administration.
However, she maintained that a determined government can lay the groundwork for progress and set the country on a stable path within one presidential term.
Her remarks have sparked political debate as the country gradually shifts focus toward the 2027 elections.
Observers say her declaration signals growing competition among opposition figures seeking to challenge the administration of President William Ruto, who has led Kenya since 2022.
Karua remains one of the prominent opposition leaders positioning herself ahead of the upcoming contest, insisting that leadership should be measured by service rather than the number of years spent in power.
