Copycats? Sifuna Suffers First Obstacle as Registrar Rejects Party Name Reservation

The Registrar of Political Parties John Lorionokou has dealt a blow to the Linda Mwananchi camp after rejecting their request to reserve the movement’s name as a political party.

According to Mr Lorionokou, the proposed Linda Mwananchi slogan closely resembles slogans already associated with other registered political outfits, making it ineligible for reservation under the current regulations.

The setback comes shortly after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna unveiled the movement’s online platform on March 13, urging supporters to register and connect with the initiative through its website and social media platforms.

Last month, Mr Sifuna called for a Linda Mwananchi census as part of efforts to strengthen the movement’s push to unseat President William Ruto. He said the initiative would only succeed if it is backed by clear numbers, proper planning and a strong grassroots structure.

The senator noted that while members of the Linda Mwananchi movement have been telling supporters during rallies that they can send President Ruto home, the effort must first be supported by accurate figures and a well-organised national network.

The push by Mr Sifuna comes amid heightened political activity by groups advocating for a one-term presidency for President Ruto.

The Linda Mwananchi movement has been at the forefront of rallies and public engagements criticising government policies, arguing that their efforts are aimed at promoting democratic accountability and protecting wananchi from economic hardship.
