IEBC Announces Temporary Jobs Paying Ksh2000 Per Day With Tight Deadline Ahead of February By-Elections: How to Apply

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced the recruitment of temporary election officials ahead of by-elections scheduled for February 26, 2026, offering short-term employment opportunities to Kenyans across affected regions.

In a public notice issued on Wednesday, January 21, the electoral body said it was seeking to hire support electoral trainers, presiding officers, deputy presiding officers, and polling clerks to facilitate the conduct of the upcoming polls.

According to the commission, the recruitment exercise is part of preparations to ensure smooth voting, counting, and tallying processes during the by-elections, which will fill several vacant elective positions at both national and county levels.

Interested applicants have been directed to submit their applications online through the IEBC recruitment portal at jobs.iebc.or.ke. The deadline for applications is Monday, January 26, 2026.

In its notice, the commission outlined the roles and responsibilities attached to each position. Support electoral trainers will play a key role in preparing election officials by assisting in the training of presiding officers, their deputies, and polling clerks.

Their duties will include guiding trainees on polling procedures, vote counting, and results tallying, as well as helping organise training venues and materials.

Support trainers will also oversee the distribution, collection, and security of training equipment and documents during cascaded training sessions.

Presiding officers and deputy presiding officers will be stationed at polling centres, where they will be responsible for overseeing the entire voting process.

This includes ensuring compliance with electoral laws, managing polling staff, and maintaining order at polling stations.

Additionally, presiding officers will be tasked with distributing election materials to clerks under their supervision and later delivering the completed results to the constituency returning officer after counting is concluded.

Polling clerks, on the other hand, will support the daily operations of polling stations. Their responsibilities will include setting up polling and counting rooms, verifying voters before they cast their ballots, issuing ballot papers, and assisting with sorting and counting votes under the direction of presiding officers.

The commission also disclosed the daily remuneration for the temporary positions. Support electoral trainers and presiding officers will earn Ksh2,000 per day, while deputy presiding officers will receive Ksh1,800 per day. Polling clerks’ pay rates were not specified in the notice.

To apply, candidates have been advised to visit the IEBC official website at iebc.or.ke and navigate to the “Work With Us” section.

From there, applicants should click on the “Vacancies” tab, proceed to “Job Listings,” and select the relevant category corresponding to the position they wish to apply for.

The recruitment drive comes weeks after the commission confirmed that four by-elections will be held on February 26, 2026.

These include the by-election for the Member of the National Assembly for Isiolo South Constituency and ward-level contests in Muminji and Evurore wards in Embu County, as well as West Kabras Ward in Kakamega County.

IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethokon said the commission is committed to conducting credible, transparent, and well-managed by-elections, noting that the recruitment of competent and adequately trained personnel is critical to achieving that goal.

The announcement has been welcomed by job seekers, particularly young people, as the country continues to grapple with high unemployment levels.

Temporary election jobs have historically attracted thousands of applicants due to their accessibility and relatively straightforward requirements.
