A bus ferrying supporters of Football Kenya Federation Premier League side AFC Leopards was involved in a road accident in Timboroa on Sunday evening, leaving several passengers injured.
The bus, operated by Latema commuter services, was transporting AFC Leopards fans when it overturned along the busy Nakuru–Eldoret highway. The exact cause of the accident was not immediately established, but no fatalities were reported.
AFC Leopards chairman Boniface Ambani confirmed the incident through a statement shared on social media late Sunday, saying several club members had sustained injuries and were receiving medical attention.
“A Latema bus carrying AFC Leopards SC members has been involved in an accident at Timboroa. Several members have been injured. Our prayers are with them, and we wish them a quick recovery,” Ambani said.
Witnesses at the scene said the accident caused temporary disruption along the highway as rescue teams and motorists assisted the injured before they were taken to nearby hospitals. Traffic police later moved in to clear the scene and restore normal flow of vehicles.
The accident comes amid growing concern over road safety during the festive season, a period often marked by heavy travel across the country. Authorities have repeatedly warned motorists against speeding, careless overtaking, and driving under poor visibility conditions.
In a related development, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a nationwide alert urging all road users to exercise caution due to ongoing heavy rains and foggy conditions in several regions.
In a statement released on Sunday, NTSA said the prevailing weather has significantly increased the risk of road accidents, particularly on highways passing through highland and forested areas such as Timboroa.
“Ongoing heavy rainfall and foggy conditions are affecting some parts of the country, significantly heightening road risks due to reduced visibility and slippery surfaces. Drivers, motorcyclists, pedestrians, and cyclists are urged to exercise extreme caution,” NTSA said.
The warning follows an advisory by the Kenya Meteorological Department, which forecast widespread rainfall across large parts of the country over a 24-hour period from Sunday morning to Monday morning.
According to the weather department, regions expected to receive rainfall include the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, and the Coastal region.
Residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas were advised to remain alert, as persistent rainfall could lead to flooding and poor road conditions.
The advisory comes at a time when many Kenyans are travelling to visit family, attend social gatherings, or engage in outdoor activities during the holiday season, increasing pressure on major roads.
Road safety agencies have urged motorists to reduce speed, maintain safe distances, and avoid night travel in areas prone to fog, especially along major highways.
Investigations into the Timboroa accident are ongoing as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
