People in Thailand were left in shock after a 65-year-old woman was found alive in her coffin just before her cremation.
The strange incident happened at Wat Rat Prakhong Tham, a Buddhist temple in Nonthaburi, a province close to Bangkok. Temple staff said they had never seen anything like it in their lives.
According to the temple management, the woman had been brought in by her brother, who believed she had died two days earlier in Phitsanulok, a province about 500 kilometers away.
The family thought she had stopped breathing and had become completely unresponsive. Because of this, her brother placed her in a coffin and decided to take her to Bangkok, since she had earlier said she wanted to donate her organs to a hospital.
However, the hospital refused to accept the body because the brother did not have an official death certificate. Without this document, the hospital could not proceed.
In confusion and frustration, the brother then decided to take her to the temple, which is known for offering free cremation services to families who cannot afford a funeral.
Pairat Soodthoop, the temple’s general and financial affairs manager, explained that he was discussing the issue of the missing death certificate when something unexpected happened.
As he spoke to the brother, they heard a faint knocking sound coming from inside the coffin. At first, he thought it was impossible, but the knocking continued.
Pairat asked the brother to open the coffin immediately. When the lid was lifted, both men were shocked to see the woman moving slightly. She opened her eyes and tried to lift her arms.
The staff said she appeared weak but clearly alive. Pairat believes she must have been knocking for some time, trying to get someone’s attention.
The brother was deeply emotional and confused, saying his sister had been bedridden for two years. Her health had been poor, and she often slipped into long periods of silence.
When she became unresponsive for two days and seemed not to be breathing, he assumed she had passed away. He said he never imagined she could still be alive.
Temple staff quickly called for medical help. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.
Doctors are now monitoring her condition, and the temple’s abbot has promised that the temple will cover her medical expenses.
The story has spread widely on Thai social media, with many people expressing shock and relief.
Some called it a miracle, while others said it was a reminder of why death must always be confirmed by medical professionals.
