REVEALED: Why Trump has Sent US Vice President to Hold a Meeting with Ruto in Kenya

US Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to tour the country at the end of this month on President Donald Trump's request.

The visit, scheduled for November 25 to 30, comes at a crucial time for Kenya–US trade and security relations, with President Ruto’s administration seeking to revive the close partnership that marked the final years of former President Joe Biden’s tenure.

Although State House Nairobi has remained tight-lipped on the details, high-level discussions between top officials from both governments are said to be ongoing.

Diplomats are reportedly reviewing comprehensive cooperation agreements signed in May 2024 during President Ruto’s US trip.

Some Republican lawmakers have recently called for a review of that status, citing Kenya’s growing ties with China, Russia, and Iran.

In August, Senator Jim Risch tabled a bill in Congress seeking a reassessment of Kenya’s MNNA status, pointing to its trade with those nations and alleged human rights violations.

Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi acknowledged the tensions but emphasized that Nairobi–Washington relations remain strong, adding that new discussions now include technology transfer, electronic component manufacturing, and rare earth mineral development.

Another key agenda item will be the Haiti peace mission, where Kenya has deployed 800 police officers to help restore order.

However, the mission faces funding challenges after the US signaled it might withhold its $200 million contribution until further approval from the United Nations.

Vance’s visit also comes at a time when Washington is increasingly concerned about China’s growing influence in Africa, especially after President Ruto’s April visit to Beijing, where he and President Xi Jinping agreed to deepen economic and technological cooperation.
