Dr. Miguna Explains Why He Believes Raila Odinga’s Mourners Are Abusing the Luo Traditional Culture

Outspoken lawyer and political activist Dr. Miguna Miguna has launched a scathing attack on the ongoing activities at the late Raila Odinga’s Opoda home in Bondo, accusing mourners and political leaders of turning what should be a solemn period of mourning into a festival of greed and materialism.

Through a fiery statement shared online, Dr. Miguna condemned what he described as naked obscene materialism, money laundering, and desecration of Luo culture claiming that the ceremonies at Opoda have drifted far from the cultural principles that define mourning among the Luo people.

He accused political elites and opportunists of exploiting the occasion to display wealth and seek political favor rather than to honor the late opposition leader’s legacy with dignity and humility.

“What is going on at the Opoda home of Raila Odinga is not mourning. It’s naked obscene materialism, money laundering, and desecration of Luo culture,” Miguna wrote.

“We have not seen a single mourner drinking porridge or eating omena, as is customary, despite the 100,000 heads of cattle presented during this unprecedented vulgarity and ethnocide.” he added.

Dr. Miguna’s remarks appeared to target high-profile politicians and business figures who have been making publicized visits to Bondo, bearing expensive gifts, cash donations, and livestock in a display that has attracted both admiration and criticism.

According to Miguna Miguna, such actions undermine the authenticity of the Luo mourning tradition, which values simplicity, communal support, and respect for the dead.

“Genuine cultures and societies are built on values of integrity, honesty, decency, and humanity. Little of that is exhibited by those pretending to prostrate themselves while presenting ghoulish ‘presents’ of dubious origins.” Miguna Miguna said.

His comments have sparked intense debate across social and political spaces, with supporters praising him for speaking truth to power, while others accuse him of being insensitive and disrespectful to the grieving Odinga family.

Nonetheless, Dr. Miguna Miguna has maintained his stance, insisting that his critique is not personal but cultural and moral — aimed at defending what he calls “the sanctity of Luo traditions from political corruption.”
