Condition Gachagua Wants DCP Candidates to Meet Before Being Allowed to Participate in Nominations

DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua has sounded a warning over what he calls the growing number of jokers pretending to be serious contenders within his party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the party headquarters on Wednesday, Gachagua said that while the party welcomes the participation of young people in politics, it must also guard against opportunists who only want to take advantage of the system.

He noted that the DCP is ready to support youth by exempting them from nomination fees but insisted that the privilege will not be given freely to everyone.

“I support the plan to exempt youth from paying nomination fees, but this should only apply to those who show commitment. You must prove that you are serious by bringing new members into the party,” Gachagua said, according to The People Daily.

To ensure only genuine aspirants benefit from the exemption, the party has introduced clear conditions.
Young people planning to run for Member of County Assembly (MCA) seats will need to register at least 1,000 new members with the party.

Those seeking to contest as Members of Parliament must recruit 2,500 new members, while those eyeing the positions of Governor or Woman Representative are required to bring in 5,000 new members.

Party officials say the new approach will help strengthen the DCP’s grassroots presence and prevent briefcase politicians from exploiting the nomination process.

Gachagua emphasized that political parties need committed leaders who can mobilize communities and build trust among voters.

“Politics is about service and organization. If you can’t even bring a few people to join your party, how will you convince thousands to vote for you?” he posed.

The move has sparked mixed reactions among young aspirants. Some have welcomed it, saying it will test the seriousness of candidates, while others feel it may favor those with more resources or influence.

Despite the debate, Gachagua maintained that DCP’s main goal is to create a platform for hardworking and visionary leaders who can represent the people’s interests effectively.

“The future of this party depends on those ready to work, not those looking for shortcuts,” he concluded.
