A storm is brewing in President William Ruto’s camp after a new twist emerged in the petition challenging Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki’s eligibility to be appointed as Deputy President in the future.
The petition, filed before the courts, seeks clarification on whether Kindiki qualifies to hold the office of Deputy President, with questions raised on technical and constitutional grounds.
The matter has now become a hot topic inside Kenya Kwanza, with some leaders fearing that the case could shake up Ruto’s 2027 succession plan.
Sources close to the petitioners argue that there are issues surrounding Kindiki’s previous role in government.
They claim that certain constitutional provisions might limit his eligibility. On the other hand, Kindiki’s allies have dismissed the petition as a political witch-hunt aimed at blocking him from becoming a possible running mate in 2027 after President Ruto decided to drop his former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The development has caused unease within UDA, where divisions are already evident. Reports indicate that some party insiders had quietly fronted Kindiki as a more appealing candidate compared to any other Mt Kenya in a possible Ruto second-term ticket. The petition, therefore, threatens to complicate these succession debates.
Leaders from Mount Kenya have also taken sides, with a section strongly backing Gachagua again while others believe Kindiki represents a fresh face that could unite the region.
The case has now put Ruto in a tight corner, as any outcome is likely to trigger further wrangles in his coalition.
Political analysts say the petition could reshape alliances, with some warning that if Kindiki is barred, Ruto may be forced to look for alternative to hold the critical Mount Kenya voting bloc.
