Fresh controversy has erupted in Migori County following the release of a postmortem report detailing the cause of death of Alan Kamau Kimani, a young man who died under mysterious circumstances while inside a police post.
According to the pathologist’s findings, Alan died as a result of asphyxia — a condition caused by loss of oxygen, typically associated with strangulation, suffocation, or obstruction of airflow.
The report has intensified public outrage, especially given earlier claims that Alan had been detained over a Kshs 15,000 demand made by a police officer shortly before his death.
What has shocked many even further is a disturbing incident that unfolded during the postmortem examination.
Witnesses, including family members and investigators, revealed that the same police officer who had allegedly demanded the money before Alan Kamau died boldly walked into the postmortem room without authorization.
He reportedly began questioning the pathologist and attempting to monitor the proceedings as if overseeing the process.
However, when his identity was confirmed by the family, suspicion escalated. Confronted about his presence and motives, the officer hastily exited the room without explanation.
Investigators and human rights observers now believe the officer’s actions amounted to direct interference with an active investigation — a serious breach of protocol and possible obstruction of justice.
Kamau Alan’s family has described the conduct as intimidation and an attempt to manipulate the investigation process. They are now calling for the immediate arrest and suspension of all officers involved in the case.
Human rights activists have since demanded that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) take over the probe to ensure impartiality.
Asphyxia-related deaths in police custody often indicate foul play, and experts argue that the cause of death contradicts any narrative of natural or self-inflicted harm.
The postmortem has now shifted the case from a mysterious death to a potential homicide.
Public tension continues to rise in Migori as residents demand transparency and accountability.
Many are urging the Interior Ministry to intervene and ensure justice for Alan Kamau Kimani — insisting that no investigation can be credible if the prime suspect is seen freely meddling with evidence.
