Morning Shock As Mpesa Agent Found Dead Roadside, Money Frozen From Account, 1 Million Cash Stolen

Residents of Juja, Kiambu County, woke up to a disturbing scene early Thursday morning after an M-Pesa agent was found dead by the roadside under unclear circumstances

The deceased, identified as Mary Wanjiku, 32, was well known in the area for running a busy mobile money shop near Juja Town.

According to eyewitnesses, Wanjiku’s body was discovered by boda boda riders along the Juja–Ruiru road at around 6:00 a.m.

Her lifeless body was lying beside her motorbike, which appeared to have been abandoned. There were no visible injuries, but her handbag and phone were missing.

Police officers who arrived at the scene said initial investigations show that Wanjiku might have been attacked the previous night after closing her shop.

Reports indicate that her M-Pesa account had been emptied, and over Sh1 million was withdrawn in a series of suspicious transactions hours before her death.

Authorities have since frozen her mobile money accounts as they probe how the funds were transferred.

Her distraught husband, Peter Mwangi, said Wanjiku had received a late-night call before she left home, claiming she needed to meet a client urgently. That was the last time she was seen alive.

“She said she would not take long. I tried calling her later, but her phone was off. This morning, I got the shocking news that she was found dead,” Mwangi told reporters.

Police suspect that a criminal gang could be behind the murder, targeting M-Pesa agents known to handle large sums of money.

Kiambu County Police Commander, Patrick Muriuki, confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and several suspects are being traced using phone data and CCTV footage from nearby shops.

Wanjiku’s death has left the Juja community in deep sorrow, with fellow traders calling for tighter security and protection for mobile money operators who often handle large cash amounts.

Her body was moved to Thika Level Five Hospital mortuary for a postmortem as police continue with investigations.

Authorities have urged the public to remain alert and report any suspicious individuals linked to M-Pesa fraud or night-time activities in the area.
