CS Wandayi Reveals State of ODM, Luo Community After Raila's Death

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has confirmed that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will continue working with President William Ruto’s government, even after the passing of party leader Raila Odinga.

Speaking at Raila’s rural home in Bondo, Wandayi—who has been a lifelong ODM member—expressed gratitude to the late leader for leaving the party united and on good terms with the current administration. 

He noted that ODM’s partnership with the government would not end soon, adding that President Ruto had shown goodwill to Raila and the Luo community.

“Baba left us in government, and that’s where we will stay until the end. I can say without fear that we will walk together with President Ruto beyond 2027,” Wandayi told mourners.

The CS also endorsed the party’s decision to appoint Dr. Oburu Odinga, Raila’s elder brother, as the acting party leader following an emergency meeting by the ODM National Executive Committee (NEC).

According to Wandayi, Oburu has the experience, maturity, and patience needed to guide the party through this transition while maintaining cooperation with Ruto’s administration. 

He urged ODM’s top leadership to hold a national delegates’ convention soon after Raila’s burial to officially confirm Oburu as the new party leader.

“ODM made a wise choice by appointing Dr. Oburu Odinga. I will personally propose that the party quickly convenes to formalize his position,” Wandayi added.

Oburu’s appointment came just hours after Raila’s passing and took effect immediately. He is expected to serve as interim leader until the party holds elections for a permanent successor.

During the same gathering, several leaders praised Raila’s lifelong dedication to democracy and unity, calling on ODM members to honor his legacy by remaining peaceful and focused on development.

Wandayi assured supporters that ODM’s collaboration with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) would not weaken the opposition’s voice but would instead help deliver services to Kenyans in line with Raila’s vision of a united and prosperous nation.
