A woman accused of impersonating a teacher in Laikipia has been arraigned in court again after prosecutors levelled fresh charges of fraud against her.
The suspect, identified as Caroline Makena, is alleged to have stolen the identity of another woman to secure a job with the Teachers Service Commission.
According to investigators, the accused obtained a total of Ksh 294,134 while working as a teacher at Doldol Primary School in Laikipia North Sub-County between May 2023 and February 2024.
She was arrested and charged with acquiring public funds illegally in addition to earlier charges of impersonation that had already placed her before the court.
Court documents reveal that Makena allegedly used forged academic certificates and official documents belonging to another individual to convince education officials she was qualified for employment.
Detectives further established that she presented false details to the Teachers Service Commission offices in Laikipia in an elaborate plan to secure the position.
The magistrate directed that she remain out on cash bail after noting that she was already facing similar charges in a separate case.
The fresh accusations add to her growing legal battles that have drawn public attention across the country.
Education stakeholders in Laikipia expressed concern over the case, noting that it highlights gaps in vetting processes within the Teachers Service Commission.
Many have called for tighter scrutiny of employment applications to safeguard the integrity of the education sector.
The case will be mentioned at a later date as prosecutors prepare to present more evidence.
Meanwhile, the accused continues to face widespread criticism as the court process unfolds.
