The Serious Bone of Contention Between Gachagua and Wamalwa that Threatens to Sink Opposition's Ship

Rigathi Gachagua thinks the number of votes a presidential candidate brings to the table is enough to tell who should be given the opposition's flag.

According to Gachagua, the number of votes is the ultimate decider.

On the other hand, Eugene Wamalwa thinks the number of votes a candidate brings to the table is not the ultimate deciding factor but just one among many factors that must be considered by a team of experts who will make the final decision.

Implicitly, Gachagua appears to say there is no need to employ experts when the candidates themselves know the number of votes they control.

On the other hand, Wamalwa appears to be favouring the "experts way."

This is the main bone of contention that is threatening to sink the opposition ship.

Speaking during separate TV interviews, Gachagua insisted that only a candidate capable of mobilizing millions of votes can face off with President William Ruto in 2027.

He argued that anything less would hand Ruto a free pass for a second term. Gachagua said the opposition cannot afford experiments or weak candidates.

But Wamalwa, the DAP Kenya leader, countered that such thinking ignores the need for credibility, integrity, and a wider national appeal.

He insisted that a clean candidate free from scandals, backed by expert advice, will give the alliance a better chance of beating Ruto. Wamalwa further said that no single region, including Mt. Kenya, can remove Ruto without a united national front.

Political commentators warn that unless the two sides compare notes and resolve their differences, the opposition coalition could lose steam before it even takes off. The flagbearer issue is the biggest test to their unity.
