Ruto Tells Teachers How Gachagua Lacked Education, Admits He Was Failing Him

President William Ruto has once again spoken openly about the fallout with his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, this time using his education as a point of criticism.

Speaking at the Waalimu na Rais Forum held at State House, Nairobi, the president addressed hundreds of teachers who had gathered to discuss their welfare and government policies on education.

In the middle of his remarks, he made a thinly veiled reference to Gachagua, suggesting that part of the reason for their fallout was linked to his deputy’s academic background.

Ruto, without mentioning Gachagua’s name directly, said leaders must surround themselves with people who are more knowledgeable and skilled in order to succeed.

“If you want to achieve great things, have a deputy who is more educated than you. When you work with smart people, they make you shine, and the whole government benefits. But if you have someone who is constantly complaining about education, you are bound to fail,” Ruto said to laughter from the audience.

The president used the moment to heap praise on his current deputy, Professor Kithure Kindiki, describing him as intelligent, competent, and a strong communicator who understands government operations.

“Today, I have a deputy who is more learned, and it makes my work easier. He can defend the government in public and explain our agenda clearly to citizens,” he added.

Rigathi Gachagua, who served as Ruto’s deputy from 2022 until his impeachment in 2024, has never hidden the fact that he does not consider himself highly educated.

He studied Political Science and Literature at the University of Nairobi but often joked about not being as academically accomplished as his boss.

At several public events, Gachagua admitted he wished he had pursued a master’s degree. His self-deprecating remarks sometimes made him popular with ordinary Kenyans, who saw him as relatable, but they also opened the door for critics like Ruto to question his competence.
A Broken Partnership

Although they campaigned together in 2022 on a promise of unity, Ruto and Gachagua’s relationship started to sour midway through their first term.

The president often complained of being left alone to drive government policy while Gachagua focused on politics in his home region.

Ruto reportedly grew frustrated that his deputy did not actively defend the government or articulate its achievements, leaving him to shoulder the burden alone.

The fallout reached its peak in October 2024 when Parliament voted to impeach Gachagua, accusing him of misconduct and incompetence.
The Rise of Kindiki

After Gachagua’s exit, Ruto turned to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, who was quickly sworn in as Deputy President. Kindiki, a law professor and respected legal mind, has been praised for his calm demeanor and clear communication style.

Since assuming office, Kindiki has become one of Ruto’s most trusted allies, often representing the government in delicate situations and reassuring the public during times of crisis.

His academic background has also boosted his image as a competent leader ready to step in when needed.

Gachagua, despite his impeachment, has not faded from the political scene. He has been rallying supporters and is positioning himself as a key challenger to Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
