Pupil Feared Dead, 13 Students Injured in Nairobi School Bus Crash

A tragic accident in Nairobi’s Mihang’o area has left one pupil feared dead and several others injured after a school bus lost control and crashed on Friday evening, September 12, 2025.

The incident happened in Chokaa, along a busy stretch of road, when the bus suddenly veered off its lane and rammed into a wall.

Sadly, the bus also struck a young girl who was walking by the roadside. Witnesses reported that she was not a pupil of the school involved in the crash.

At the time of reporting, the exact cause of the crash had not been revealed. Police officers from Kayole Police Station quickly arrived at the scene, towing the bus to the station as part of ongoing investigations.

Authorities have promised to establish whether the accident was caused by mechanical failure, speeding, or driver error.

The school management did not comment immediately, leaving many parents anxious as they awaited updates on the safety of their children.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of panic and confusion. Videos from bystanders showed the front of the bus smashed in by the impact.

About 13 pupils were believed to have been inside when the accident occurred.

Several children sustained injuries ranging from cuts to broken limbs. Some were rushed to nearby hospitals, while others who appeared shocked and shaken were attended to by first aid providers at the scene.

Residents, who gathered in large numbers, expressed anger and sadness, calling for more caution when transporting school children.

This is not the first time a school bus accident has raised concerns among Kenyans. Just a month earlier, on August 8, a bus carrying students and teachers from Salvation Army Imusutsu High School overturned along the Kisumu–Busia highway in Vihiga County.

The group was headed to Meru for the Kenya National Music Festival when the vehicle lost control near Sirwa Posta. Several pupils were injured in that crash.
Call for Safer School Transport

The Mihang’o tragedy has once again highlighted the need for stricter safety measures for school buses.

Parents and residents are urging schools to regularly service their vehicles and ensure drivers observe traffic rules to protect young lives.
