Kenya’s opposition is facing growing pressure from both supporters and political observers to come together and agree on a joint presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.
For months now, there has been quiet tension among key opposition leaders over who should carry the coalition’s presidential flag.
The debate is becoming more serious as time passes, and pressure is building from the grassroots and party members across the country for a clear direction.
Leading the discussions is former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who now heads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Since leaving the government, Gachagua has been vocal in criticizing the current administration and has openly expressed his desire to run for president in 2027.
Speaking at recent rallies, Gachagua has described himself as the most prepared and experienced leader to face President Ruto.
He claims to have the support of many regions and believes he can unite the opposition and the country.
But he is not the only one with ambitions.
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has also shown interest in the top seat.
Known for his tough leadership style and strong record in public service, Matiang’i has been quietly building networks and support behind the scenes.
Many view him as a serious candidate with national appeal.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is another key figure in the race.
A seasoned politician who has contested before, Kalonzo believes his time has come.
He has loyal supporters, especially in the Eastern region, and is seen as someone who can bring stability and experience to the table.
Also in the opposition camp are Martha Karua, who was Raila Odinga’s running mate in 2022, and Eugene Wamalwa of DAP-K.
While they haven’t openly declared presidential ambitions, their influence in national politics remains strong.Click here.
