A man named Mogaka Nyanchera shocked his neighbors after he decided to abandon his wife of 12 years, Kerubo Moraa, because she had given birth to four daughters and no son.
According to the neighbors, the couple was once admired for their love.
Mogaka worked as a boda boda rider in Kisii town, while Kerubo sold vegetables at Daraja Mbili market.
Together, they built a modest home, and everyone thought they were living happily.
But trouble began when Mogaka started blaming Kerubo for “failing” to give him a son.
“She is a good wife. She works hard, takes care of the children, and never disrespects him. But Mogaka became obsessed with having a son to carry his name,” said Nyaboke, a close neighbor.
Kerubo’s four daughters—Bwari, Kemunto, Bosibori, and Nyanchera—are still young and schooling.
Villagers say they have seen their mother struggling to feed them after Mogaka walked away.
In Kisii culture, some men still hold the belief that a family without sons is incomplete. However, local elders strongly condemned Mogaka’s decision.
“Children are a gift from God, whether girls or boys. Blaming the mother is ignorance, because science has shown that men determine the gender of a child,” said Mzee Onchiri, an elder in the village.
Kerubo has refused to let despair take away her strength. She continues selling vegetables to provide for her daughters. She told this writer that her dream is to see her girls educated and independent.
“I will raise them to be leaders. One day, Mogaka will regret what he did,” she said with tears in her eyes but also courage in her voice. Click here.
