As the Jubilee party moves to hold its National Delegates Conference today, an insider has revealed that all has allegedly been set for former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to assume the position of Deputy Party Leader.
The special conference, to be presided over by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, is expected to chart the party’s future and settle ongoing leadership disputes.
A notice issued by Uhuru stated that delegates would receive a status report from the National Executive Committee, review the party’s constitution and policies, and discuss vacant leadership positions.
Sources close to the party leadership indicated that Matiang’i will be formally welcomed into Jubilee and is likely to take up the deputy party leader role as part of preparations for Uhuru’s eventual retirement from politics.
After Uhuru retires, he will allegedly hand over the mantle to Matiang'i who will eventually take over the party as party leader.
“The issue of Dr Matiang’i joining the party will be discussed, and proposals to have him as the deputy party leader are already on the table. He will eventually take over from Uhuru ahead of the 2027 General Election,” the insider said.
The conference also comes amid calls to deal with the Sabina Chege and Kanini Kega faction, which had previously attempted to oust Uhuru from leadership.
However, a High Court ruling in June restored Uhuru’s control and reinstated Jeremiah Kioni as Secretary General.
Kioni confirmed that 1,200 delegates from across the country would attend the event, describing it as historic. He added that the party would begin grassroots mobilisation after the meeting, focusing on reviving Jubilee ahead of 2027.
