"He's not Ambitious to be President" Tragic Flaws in Kalonzo's Long Walk to Statehouse

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has been in politics long enough to know the terrain, yet his journey to State House has been anything but smooth.

Despite decades in public service and a reputation as a dependable coalition partner, Kalonzo has often struggled to stamp his authority on the national stage.

Analysts point out that his biggest weakness lies in ambition. While other contenders like Raila Odinga and William Ruto have relentlessly fought for the top seat, Kalonzo has often appeared hesitant, waiting to be invited rather than staking his claim boldly.

This wait-and-see attitude, they say, has cost him ground in Rift Valley, Western, and Coast, regions where he is rarely seen making a strong case.

Political commentator Javas Bigambo argues that Kalonzo’s “mellow character” has not always served him well. Unlike rivals who project themselves as fearless and aggressive, Kalonzo is often seen as too cautious.

Bigambo adds that even when he positions himself as a key player, like during coalition talks, Kalonzo is quick to settle for deputy roles. That image, critics warn, weakens his presidential appeal.

Still, Kalonzo enjoys a loyal support base in Ukambani, where he remains the undisputed kingpin.

Leaders like Senator Dan Maanzo believe his strength lies in his ability to negotiate, reminding Kenyans that without Kalonzo’s support, many coalitions would have collapsed.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the big question is whether Kalonzo can finally step out of the shadows and present himself as a serious presidential contender.
