Governor Orengo Under Fire as Atandi Demands Immediate Explanation from Him On Why He Sacked Over 380 Siaya County Health Workers

Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi has called out Siaya Governor James Orengo to explain the sudden dismissal of more than 380 county health workers.

The lawmaker questioned why so many employees were let go after serving for months, describing the situation as a scandal that exposes deep problems in the county government.

Speaking on Wednesday, Atandi said the governor must take responsibility and act firmly against senior county officials accused of corruption and mismanagement.

He insisted that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) should step in to probe the matter.

“We want to see action from the governor. Those who took money from desperate job seekers and issued fake letters must face the law. People cannot be allowed to suffer after working for eight months only to be told they are not eligible,” Atandi said.

His remarks came after the county announced on September 12 that 385 health workers had been terminated over irregularities in their employment documents.

County Public Service Board CEO Wilfred Nyagudi explained that the decision followed the discovery of forged or inconsistent reference letters.

Nyagudi revealed that some appointment letters had suspicious dates, with deployment letters appearing earlier than the actual employment letters.

“All official documents must be signed by the chief of health. What we found were serious irregularities that could not be ignored,” he said.

Out of the 385 workers, only 120 were confirmed to be genuine employees. The rest were told not to report back to work while their salaries remained unresolved.

Atandi, however, argued that dismissing workers after eight months without prior warning was unfair and pointed to possible corruption during the recruitment process.

He demanded that Orengo assert his authority and sack officials behind the scandal.
