Speaking in Nyeri on Sunday, Gachagua, who now leads the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), told supporters that his political journey is driven by conviction and not by deals made in boardrooms.
He said Kenyans deserve to have a real choice instead of being forced to accept alliances that do not represent their struggles.
“I respect all leaders, but I will not step aside for anyone. Kenyans deserve a new beginning, and I intend to give them that option in 2027,” he said as the crowd cheered loudly.
Analysts warn that if the opposition remains divided, Ruto could have an easy path to victory. Gachagua’s tough position now adds more uncertainty to the coalition talks.
In recent months, Gachagua has styled himself as a defender of ordinary citizens. He has often criticized the government over the high cost of living, unemployment, and the lack of opportunities for young people.
He has also accused the current leadership of ignoring the daily struggles of common wananchi.
Supporters in Nyeri welcomed his firm stance, saying they want a leader who speaks directly to their issues rather than one who only negotiates for political survival.
Many of them believe Gachagua’s new party gives them an alternative voice.
However, his decision not to step down has sparked debate. Some political observers argue that his move could split the opposition vote, making it harder to unseat the incumbent.
Others believe his entry may energize voters who are tired of old alliances and want a different kind of leadership.
