Forced? IEBC Chairperson Drops a Bombshell, Reveals Who Encouraged Him to Apply the Electoral Job

The nominee for the position of Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Erastus Ethekon Edung, has revealed that it was the so-called “hustlers” who encouraged him to apply for the position.

While responding to questions before the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) at Parliament Buildings on Saturday, May 31, 2025, Mr. Edung disclosed that staff at a digital services center; Peter, Purity, and Kizito were the ones who gave him the confidence to apply for the post.

"Initially, I didn’t want to apply for this job because of the misfortunes that have befallen past holders of this position. But these Kenyans gave me courage and support, saying I am qualified to serve Kenyans in this capacity.

"So, I prepared my application documents, gave them to be typed and submitted, and then left for South Africa where I work at the African Union Development Agency," Mr. Edung told the committee members led by Chairperson George Gitonga Murugara.

The nominee, who previously served as Head of the Legal Department in Turkana County, assured JLAC members that he would carry out his duties impartially if his appointment is approved.

Mr. Edung served in Turkana County for four years under the leadership of Governor Josephat Nanok, and for two years under the current Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai.

If approved by JLAC, Mr. Edung will fill the position left vacant by the late Wafula Chebukati, the former chairperson of the IEBC.
