Brilliant Owano: Tears Flow as Briliant Kakamega Journalist Is Laid to Rest in Emotional Ceremony

Chekata village in Kakamega fell silent on Saturday, September 13, 2025, as family, friends, and community members came together to bury Brilliant “Brilly” Owano.

Her sudden death, caused by complications from a toothache, left many in disbelief and sparked deep sorrow across the region.

The young journalist was remembered as a kind-hearted woman who touched lives with her warmth and dedication.

The funeral was filled with grief, but also with love, as those close to her shared emotional tributes.

Brilliant’s father, Ayub Wekesa, described his daughter as the pride of his life. Struggling to hold back tears, he said she had been his greatest source of joy.

“My daughter was the light of my heart. Losing her has left a wound that will never heal, but I will forever treasure the moments we shared,” he said.

Her mother, Selina Naliaka, spoke with deep pain about the bond she shared with her daughter.
“No words can explain the pain of a mother burying her child. You were my joy, my comfort, and my friend. I will always remember your laughter and kindness,” she said, leaving many mourners in tears.
Siblings’ Emotional Tributes

Her siblings also shared moving messages. Venezuela Wekesa, her sister, described her as both a confidant and companion.

“Life will never be the same without you. I will miss our late-night talks and the love we shared,” she said.

Her brother Barry remembered her as his greatest supporter.

“You were more than a sister; you were my friend. The silence you’ve left in my life cannot be filled,” he said.

The most emotional moment came when words from Brilliant’s four-year-old son, Jayden, were read aloud.
“Mommy, I may not understand why you had to go, but I love you. I will miss you every day, and I know you are watching over me from heaven,” his message read, moving the entire crowd to tears.
