Confusion Rocks ODM As Sources Reveals How Sifuna Could Be Raila's Secret Card Ahead Of 2027 Polls

A fresh wave of confusion has hit the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following deepening disagreements between party leader Raila Odinga and Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna over the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The tension became public in July 2025 when Sifuna strongly criticized ODM’s political partnership with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government. His remarks appeared to go against Raila’s recent statements supporting the unity deal until 2027.

“Our partnership with Kenya Kwanza is hurting us as a party,” said Sifuna during a political forum in Nairobi.

“They have failed to honor the agreement, and I believe the deal is dead.”

This has left ODM supporters uncertain over who to believe. While Raila insists the partnership will continue for the sake of national unity, Sifuna says staying close to the current government is weakening the party’s ability to prepare for the next election.

In an interview aired on NTV from his Karen residence, Raila said,

“We agreed to be part of the Government of National Unity until 2027. It was a party decision meant to maintain peace and stability.”

Sources within ODM told Taifa Leo that Sifuna may not be acting alone. Some insiders believe he could be Raila’s “secret card,” tasked with preparing the party to pull out of the coalition when the time is right.

However, others fear he may be creating internal divisions that could damage ODM’s chances in 2027. Sifuna has continued to speak out, accusing the government of police brutality and human rights violations.

“I want President Ruto to know that removing him from office is a national priority,” he said recently.

“If an impeachment motion is brought to the Senate, I will support it without hesitation.”

Five ODM members currently serve as Cabinet Secretaries in the Government of National Unity.

This has raised more questions about the party’s true position. Is ODM part of the government, or in opposition?
