"He Was Overtaking" Police Share Details Of Nakuru Accident That Killed 13 On The Spot

A tragic accident on the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway has left 13 people dead and three others nursing serious injuries after a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) matatu collided with a trailer at Kikopey, Gilgil, on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

According to Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Opuru, the accident happened when the fourteen-seater matatu attempted to overtake another vehicle.

In the process, it crashed head-on into an oncoming trailer, killing most of the passengers instantly.

“The matatu was overtaking when it rammed into the trailer. Thirteen people lost their lives on the spot while three others were rushed to hospital in critical condition,” Opuru told reporters.

He added that the bodies were taken to Gilgil Sub-County mortuary while the injured were admitted to Gilgil Hospital for treatment.

The matatu, which had reportedly been hired by a group travelling from Nairobi for a family function, was reduced to a mangled wreck.Click here.
