Ruto Commissions Ksh3.8 Billion Ngong Flyover to Ease Nairobi Traffic Gridlock

NAIROBI – President William Ruto has commissioned the newly completed Ksh3.8 billion Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover, describing the project as a major milestone in the government’s efforts to modernise Nairobi’s transport network and improve mobility within the capital.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Monday, June 29, 2026, the President said the four-lane flyover is expected to significantly reduce congestion at one of Nairobi’s busiest intersections while improving safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

The 255-metre flyover, constructed at the Junction Mall interchange, is designed to separate traffic moving along Ngong Road from vehicles joining Naivasha Road, easing delays that have for years affected commuters and businesses operating within the area.

Ruto said the project goes beyond road construction, noting that efficient transport infrastructure is essential for driving economic growth, reducing travel costs and improving the quality of life for Kenyans.

“We are investing in productivity and competitiveness for our capital city. This Kenya shilling 3.8 billion project removes one of the most persistent traffic bottlenecks by separating traffic, improving safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists alike,” the President said.

He observed that traffic congestion has for decades imposed heavy economic costs on Nairobi by delaying workers, increasing fuel consumption and raising the cost of transporting goods across key commercial routes.

According to Ruto, reducing travel time will not only benefit motorists but will also enhance business efficiency by enabling faster movement of people and cargo within the city.

“Reduced travel time, lower transport costs, improved road safety and making cities work better for everyone. This is what modern infrastructure should do,” he stated.

The Head of State said the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover forms part of a broader strategy to transform Nairobi into a modern and globally competitive city capable of supporting investment and economic expansion.

He revealed that several other road projects are currently underway as part of the government’s infrastructure agenda.

Among the flagship developments is the Ksh3 billion Upper Hill–Kenyatta Avenue Flyover, which he said is now 60 per cent complete. The project is expected to improve connectivity between Nairobi’s central business district and the Upper Hill financial hub once completed.

The President also highlighted the ongoing Ksh1.6 billion upgrade of State House Road, saying the improvements are aimed at easing congestion along another strategic corridor while enhancing accessibility to government offices and surrounding institutions.

In addition, Ruto announced continued investment in roads leading to the Talanta Sports City complex, where Kenya is preparing to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

He said the government has allocated Ksh3.9 billion for the construction of access roads to the stadium, ensuring visitors, athletes and residents enjoy efficient transport during the continental tournament.

“At the same time, we are building access roads to Talanta Sports City through a Ksh3.9 billion investment, ensuring Kenya is ready to host AFCON with world-class infrastructure,” he said.

Beyond physical road construction, the President unveiled plans for an intelligent transport system that will introduce smart traffic management technology across Nairobi.

The programme will be implemented in phases and is expected to regulate traffic flow at more than 210 signalised junctions across the city, helping reduce congestion through real-time monitoring and coordinated traffic control.

Ruto said the adoption of smart mobility solutions will complement ongoing road expansion projects by making better use of existing infrastructure and improving the overall commuter experience.

“These are not simply investments in roads. They are investments in economic growth, productivity, competitiveness and a better quality of life. We will continue building infrastructure that supports enterprise, attracts investment and prepares Nairobi for the future,” he said.

The commissioning of the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover marks another milestone in the government’s ongoing infrastructure programme, with officials expressing optimism that the project will ease daily traffic congestion and strengthen Nairobi’s position as a regional commercial hub.
