Ahmednasir Abdullahi SC has raised sharp criticism over President William Ruto’s latest diplomatic appointments, questioning the logic behind firing a senior official from the Kenya Revenue Authority only to appoint him as ambassador moments later.
In a post on X, the prominent lawyer expressed frustration at what he described as an “Orwellian” move reminiscent of George Orwell’s Animal Farm. “He is fired from KRA.
He is then appointed Ambassador same minute. I don’t get it!...and hundreds of career officers some working in the Ministry for 30 years are overlooked,” he wrote.
The controversy stems from a presidential press release dated Wednesday, 8th April 2026, announcing nominations and redeployments within Kenya’s Foreign Service.
The document, signed by Felix K. Koskei, Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service, lists several postings including ambassadors to key missions such as Pretoria in South Africa, the Vatican, London, and Brussels.
While the release frames the changes as part of the regular cycle of succession to expand the nation’s diplomatic footprint, Ahmednasir highlighted the apparent sidelining of experienced career diplomats.
He pointed out that many officers who have served the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for decades were passed over in favour of what appears to be political redeployment.
The appointment has sparked debate about merit, fairness, and the use of diplomatic positions as rewards in government. Critics argue that such decisions undermine the professional foreign service and erode public confidence in how state institutions are managed.
Supporters of the administration, however, maintain that the president has the constitutional right to make such nominations, subject to parliamentary approval, and that fresh faces can bring new energy to Kenya’s international relations.
The development comes amid ongoing discussions about governance, accountability, and the balance between political appointments and career progression in Kenya’s public service.
