Gachagua Urges Supporters to Welcome President Ruto, as Analysts Cite Shift to De-escalate Feud

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has appealed to his Mt Kenya backyard to warmly welcome President William Ruto during his upcoming tour of the region, a move political analysts say is aimed at cooling a bitter war of words that risks damaging the opposition leader’s moral standing.

Speaking in Kirinyaga over the weekend, Gachagua told supporters not to heckle the President, arguing that the region needs continued development funding.

“Nobody should heckle the President, because there is something we want from him,” he said.

However, he directed anger instead at local leaders allied to Ruto, whom he branded “betrayers,” urging crowds to heckle them at State functions.

The apparent change of heart comes after Ruto recently delved into Gachagua’s family matters, alleging the former DP interfered with his late brother’s will to inherit property.

The President vowed to ensure justice for orphans and widows. Analysts suggest Gachagua is now seeking to de-escalate personal attacks.

“By asking his supporters to be peaceful, Gachagua is trying to stop the President from raising these family issues at rallies,” said analyst James Mengich.

Others view the move as strategic. While Gachagua’s One Term campaign remains in high gear, his ally Peter MbaĆ© stated: “We have nothing personal with Ruto. Come next year, we shall remove him constitutionally.”

Meanwhile, critic Maina Kamunya dismissed Gachagua’s call as inconsistent, arguing he “only stands for what gives him political mileage” after realizing the inheritance claims could cost him.

As the political temperature rises, Gachagua appears to be walking a tightrope, protecting the region’s development purse while trying to shield his own reputation.
