Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has raised concern over the safety of Kenyan youth who travelled abroad for work but later found themselves caught up in the war in Russia.
His remarks came as Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi flew for an official trip to Russia.
Muturi urged the government to address the growing reports that some young Kenyans who left the country seeking employment were later recruited into the Russian military.
Several families across the country have reported losing contact with their children after they travelled abroad for job opportunities.
In recent months, disturbing reports have emerged that some Kenyan youth were taken to the battlefield after being promised civilian jobs.
Instead of the work they expected, they allegedly ended up in military training camps and later deployed to fight in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Some of the affected youth are believed to have travelled through recruitment agents who promised them better paying jobs overseas. However, the situation reportedly changed after their arrival, leaving them trapped in a war that was not their own.
Families in Kenya have continued to appeal to the government to intervene and help locate their loved ones. In some cases, parents only learned about the fate of their children through social media reports and foreign news updates.
Authorities have already confirmed that a number of Kenyan citizens have died while fighting in the war. Others are still unaccounted for, raising fears among relatives who have been searching for answers for months.
