OPINION: Babu Owino Beats Sakaja & Others In An Online Gubernatorial Poll

Babu Owino has beaten other aspirants to take a narrow lead in early polling for Nairobi governor ahead of the 2027 elections. The latest survey by Mizani Africa on Facebook shows him at 24.3% support. 

He is followed closely by Agnes Kagure at 21.5% and James Gakuya at 18.1%. Incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja lags at 16.6%, reflecting voter concerns over governance and city services.

The poll highlights a fragmented race with no candidate commanding a clear majority. 

A notable 7.9% of voters remain undecided, making them a critical group that could sway the contest in the coming months. 

Mizani Africa notes that these numbers reflect early trends rather than final outcomes.

Owino’s lead is fueled by his strong grassroots support in eastern Nairobi. His vocal criticism of the current administration and engagement with youth voters has kept his profile high. 

Kagure appeals to urban and middle-class voters who favour fresh faces outside traditional politics. Her business background and independent image strengthen her appeal in Nairobi’s competitive environment.

James Gakuya shows growing support in Embakasi North, where voters see him as focused on development issues. 

However, his influence remains limited outside his strongholds. Governor Sakaja faces challenges due to public dissatisfaction with city management issues like traffic congestion, waste collection, and fiscal accountability.

Political analysts say the race is fluid at this stage. Party nominations, coalition deals, and alliances could shift voter preferences dramatically. 

The undecided 8% is seen as a key swing vote that candidates will try to win through grassroots campaigns and strong messaging.

Mizani Africa’s poll reflects early voter sentiment and indicates Nairobi could see an unpredictable contest. 

The diverse preferences across party lines suggest a multi-candidate fight. How candidates address bread-and-butter issues like jobs, housing, and the cost of living will likely define the final outcome.
