After more than twenty years of searching, a family has finally gotten the news they had been hoping for about their missing relative.
Michelle Hundley Smith, who went missing during Christmas shopping back in December 2001, has been found alive.
Michelle was 38 when she left her home in Eden and headed to Martinsville, Virginia, to do some holiday shopping.
She didn't come back. Her car was never found, and there were no real clues about what might have happened.
For years, her family didn’t know whether to grieve or keep hoping, caught in that painful space of not knowing.
The big break happened when deputies in Rockingham County, North Carolina got some new information through a nationwide law enforcement network. Authorities confirmed later that Michelle is alive and still in the state.
At her request, her exact location hasn’t been shared publicly. For her family, the confirmation was a huge relief.
Barbara Bird, who is Michelle’s cousin, said she always thought her relative was still alive. After hearing the news, she said she felt like shouting with joy.
Even with many questions left unanswered, Bird said she isn’t angry and respects Michelle’s desire for privacy. Michelle had been missing for 24 years, and her family was still desperate to find answers.
They did interviews, chased leads, and spread her story all over, hoping someone would step up with something useful. The news has gotten people talking with different opinions online.
A lot of people were glad she’s okay, but some wondered how she stayed hidden for such a long time.
For now, the family says they’re just grateful. After all those years of waiting and wondering, they now finally know she’s alive.
