Residents of Kisauni in Mombasa are in shock after an 11-year-old girl who went missing on Saturday was later found dead under disturbing circumstances.
The child had reportedly been abducted in broad daylight before her body was discovered the next morning.
According to police, the girl was last seen playing with friends near her home before she suddenly disappeared.
Her mother, Glorious Kaisa, said the family began searching for her immediately when she failed to return home.
Neighbours joined the search, but their efforts did not succeed.
The family later reported the matter at Junda Police Station as fear grew that something terrible had happened.
On Sunday morning, residents in the Manani area made a grim discovery when they found the girl’s body inside a carrier bag about two kilometres from her home.
Police officers were called to the scene and confirmed the child had been killed.
The incident has caused deep sorrow and anger among residents who are demanding justice.
Kisauni Sub County Police Commander Francis Mori confirmed that detectives had launched investigations to identify those responsible and determine the motive behind the killing.
He said officers are gathering evidence and speaking to witnesses as they work to track down the suspects.
The tragedy has sparked fear among parents in the area who say cases involving children are becoming too common.
One concerned parent questioned until when families would continue losing their children and said the pain felt by parents in the community was deep and unbearable.
Community leaders have urged parents to remain vigilant as police continue the investigation into the shocking crime.
