Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has urged Kenyans to be cautious about hailing him as a potential presidential candidate, saying that political hype alone does not win elections.
Sifuna, who also serves as the ODM secretary general, made the remarks amid growing online and public excitement about a possible 2027 presidential bid.
The senator recently launched the Linda Mwananchi caravan, an initiative aimed at engaging citizens on political issues and governance.
While the caravan has attracted significant attention, Sifuna stressed that enthusiasm on social media cannot be equated with real voter support.
He emphasized that any decision to run for the presidency must be based on concrete evidence of public backing, including registered voters who are ready to turn out on election day.
Speaking to the BBC, Sifuna said, “Before you hype me to vie for the presidency, I want to know how many of us there are. Social media excitement alone cannot translate into political support.
I am ready—even if asked to sweep the State House—but we must know our numbers and how many registered voters can turn out on their own.”
Sifuna’s comments come amid accusations from some ODM members that he is a project of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, allegedly designed to destabilize the party and discourage support for President William Ruto.
Prominent ODM figures, including Siaya Governor James Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, suggested that some moves against Sifuna are influenced by Uhuru’s strategic interventions ahead of the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, party leaders aligned with the current government have dismissed these claims, insisting that ODM will continue cooperating with President Ruto and that the party’s internal processes remain independent.
As political debates intensify, Sifuna’s message underscores the importance of grounding political ambitions in measurable support rather than online hype.
His approach signals a focus on tangible grassroots mobilization and voter engagement, reminding Kenyans that social media excitement, while powerful, must be matched by real numbers at the ballot box.
In the coming months, discussions about potential presidential candidates are expected to intensify. Sifuna has made it clear that any step toward a national bid will be deliberate, carefully considered, and based on genuine public support.
