Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has reportedly caught the United Opposition off guard after aligning with the Party of National Unity (PNU) to form a new political arrangement ahead of anticipated coalition negotiations.
PNU has formally resolved not to field a presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election, opting instead to back Matiang'i, a move widely interpreted as strategic positioning within the broader opposition camp.
The United Opposition is expected to hold a retreat to deliberate on its presidential flag bearer who will face President William Ruto in 2027.
As the leader of the Jubilee Party, Kenyatta is believed to have sanctioned the latest developments, despite not being physically present during the key consultations, according to insiders.
Sources indicate that the alignment of parties associated with former Presidents Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta is aimed at boosting the appeal of Dr. Fred Matiang’i’s candidacy in the Mount Kenya region, a crucial voting bloc in national elections.
Political analysts also view the emerging alliance as a possible signal that Dr. Matiang’i could be positioning himself for a solo presidential bid in 2027, especially if the United Opposition fails to reach a consensus on a joint candidate.
Meanwhile, Jubilee Party presidential hopeful Dr. Fred Matiang’i has maintained that he will not accept any decision on the coalition’s flag bearer unless the selection process is free, transparent, and inclusive.
Matiang’i has further insisted that a credible and transparent process is necessary to build public trust and unity within the opposition ahead of the next general election.
